Decomposition of rice hulls as influenced by different earthworm densities

There were two sets of experiments conducted at the Department of Soil Science Organic Demo Farm, Benguet State University, La Trinidad, Benguet [Philippines], specifically to 1) determine the density of earthworms effective for the composting of rice hulls, 2) determine the physical and chemical properties of compost, and 3) evaluate the performance of compost developed from rice hulls using pechay as test crop. The population densities of earthworm significantly affected the number of days from inoculation of earthworm to 50% maturity of compost, physical and chemical properties of compost produced. Addition of 125 grams earthworm in a mixture of 2:1:2:1 ratio of rice hulls, azolla, hog manure, and garden soil significantly decomposed 50% of the substrate 80 days after inoculation. Highly significant effects of compost produced from the different earthworm densities were observed on the weekly plant height, number of leaves developed, root lengths, fresh weight, yield and dry matter yield of pechay.
