Eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) and its most destructive pest, the eggplant fruit and shoot borer (EFSB) (Leucinodes orbonalis Gien.), present a compelling case for biotechnology intervention. The Maharashtra Hyrid Seed Company (Mahyco) of India developed a highly resistant transgenic BT eggplant event (EE-1) against EFSB. Mahyco's BT donor line containing event EE-1 was initially crossed and subsequently backcrossed to selected Philippine eggplant varieties Mara and Dumaguete Long Purple (DLP). Ten BC3F1 lines of eggplant cross Mara × Mahyco event EE-1 and nine BC3F1 lines of DLP × Mahyco EE-1 were evaluated in a confined trial at UP Los Baños [University of the Philippines Los Baños, College, Laguna, Philippines] event from December 2007 to September 2008. Twenty seven botanical traits, both quantitative and qualitative, were observed and recorded on all backcross lines for each population, in comparison with their respective recurrent parents. The backcross lines were on average already closely similar to their respective recurrent parents except in a few traits. However, four lines from Mara and another four from DLP were selected based on yield performance and key horticultural traits. These lines were all phenotypically more similar to the recurrent parents than the average for each backcross population. In terms of compositional traits, there were no differences among the BT + lines, Bt-lines and respective recurrent parents in moisture oil, ash, crude fiber, carbohydrate composition, total phenols and flavonoids. The proximate analysis values for Bt +, Bt - and recurrent parents all fall within the range of values obtained from the six commercial public markets in Laguna [Philippines].
