Gametophyte morphology of Pteris ensiformis Burm.f. and P. ensiformis var. victoriae Bak. (Pteridaceae)

Spores of Pteris ensiformis Burm.f. and P. ensiformis var. victoriae Bak. (Pteridaceae) were cultured in vitro for 300 days to described the development of gametophytes. The spores germinated 1-12 days after sowing and underwent polar germination, particularly Vittarian type. The prothalli exhibited Ceratopteris type of development and produced secondary prothalli. Differences of the gametophytes of two varieties were in terms of the following: abundance, crowding, size and color of prothalli, abundance per cell and color of plastids and manner of vegetative reproduction.
