Study of heterosis in ten crosses of sesame

A half diallel set was developed by crossing five sesame parents during kharif 2005 and planted in July 2006 in the experimental area of the Oilseeds Research Programme, Crop Sciences Institute, National Agricultural Research Centre, Islamabad, Pakistan. Data were recorded for days to flower initiation, days to maturity, plant height (cm), branches per plant, pods per plant and seed yield per plant (g). Analysis of variance revealed highly significant differences among the genotypes for all characters. heterosis ranged from -40.35% to 255.12%. Based on average heterotic effects for mid parents, number of pods per plant (39.56%) was the main yield component contributing towards heterosis for seed yield per plant followed by branches per plant (12.14%), days to maturity (9.67%), days to flower initiation (3.07%) and plant height (2.97%). Three crosses viz., TS-3 x SG-27, SG-7 x SG-43 and SG-27 x Til-S9 could be considered as elite crosses and se ems to have got the potential to be utilized in selection programme. Selection based on these above mentioned characters in segregating generations of these crosses would result in high yielding pure lines of sesame involving parents used in this study. Thus respective parents of these three crosses could be utilized in breed-ing programme for developing future commercial varieties of sesame.
