Composition dynamics of epiphytic algal flora on Hydrilla verticillata (Hydrocharitaceae) in Rawal Dam water of Islamabad

Composition dynamics of epiphytic alga] flora on Hydrilla verticillata (L.F.) L.C. Rich. (Family Hydrocharitaceae) in Rawal Dam water of Islamabad were analyzed for a period of one year w.e.f. 1st June 2006 to May 2007. A total of 137 species belonging to 80 genera of 8 alga] phyla were observed including Cyanophycota (40 species, belonging to 19 genera, 29.2 Volvophycota (53 species of 32 genera, 38.7 %), Euglenophycota (2 species of 2 genera, 1.5 Dinophycota (2 species of 2 genera, 1.5 %), Chrysophycota (1 species of 1 genus, 0.7 Bacillarophycota (32 species of 17 genera, 23.4 %), Xanthophycota (2 species of 2 genera, 1.5 %), Chlorophycota (5 species of 5 genera, 3.7 %), and their monthly succession was investigated. The aim of the present study was to determine the dynamics of the epiphytic algal community on Hydrilla verticellata in Rawal Dam water, along with physico-chemical properties, monthly variations in the epiphytic community etc.
