Ixodid ticks infestation in livestock and their traditional control in NWFP, Pakistan

Ticks infestation is a serious problem of livestock in NWFP, Pakistan. Present research was under taken to study infestation of Ixodid ticks on livestock species in two districts of N-WFP viz., D.I. Khan and Lakki Marwat during the period from March to November 2009. One hundred and fifty farms were visited and a total of 992 animals were studied including 435 buffaloes, 315 cows, 147 goats, 38 camels, 33 sheep and 24 donkeys from two districts, collectively. The tick infestation rates in buffaloes (24.13%), cows (35.87%), goat (23.13%), camel (28.9%), sheep (27.3%), and donkey (4.2%) were calculated. Among the traditional control methods used for ticks elimination, water and soap bath to cows and river bath to buffaloes were more common. According to interviewers (23.3%) in Lakki Marwat, an emerging traditional remedy for ticks' elimination is poultry keeping.
