The tench (Tinca tinca L.) is an autochthonous cyprid species in Serbian watercourses. Although relatively frequent, this species shows a tendency to decline in population density. The tench is a subrecedent species in the ichthyofauna of the Medjuvrsje reservoir. Major causes of tench endangerment and low population density include river-bed sedimentation, water level variations, changes in the coverage by macrophytes, as well as a massive increase in the number of allochthonous species feeding on roe and fry of both this and other autochthonous species present. Protection measures involve not only catch prohibition, but also reservoir stocking with high-quality fish fry, the actions being aimed at expanding the tench population in the ecosystem concerned.
