2008
Sharopatova, A.V. | Ozerova, M.G.
The economical challenges faced by vegetable subsector, consisting of vegetable production, processing and marketing, in the Krasnoyarski region, Russia, have been outlined, based on 2002-2007 data. The main guidelines for the subsector development are suggested. The regional subsector output doesn't meet the population demand for vegetable products: the 2007 regional self-sufficiency level was only 78.0 %. Due to vegetable production decline, imports have increased dramatically up to 19.5 % of consumption. In spite of the total vegetable crop area decrease by 1010 ha, i.e. by 9.3 %, the total output increased by 27.1 % within the above-mentioned period thanks to harvest yield growth by 41.2 %. Most part of vegetable production concentrates in household farms which occupy 87.0 % of the total vegetable area and produce about 91.8 % of output. Cabbage is the main vegetable crop for the region, its share for vegetable output accounting for 27.7 %. Geographically, the Central area plays the leading role in the subsector (30.0 % of the region's output). The subsector suffers from the lack of machinery and equipment, storages and small output. The vegetable processing plants are not fully charged. Building clusters and establishing consumers co-ops are the most acceptable solutions for these conditions
