The role of individual subsidiary farms (ISFs) in the provision of Russia's food security, ISF owner' requirements for farm products, additional income, and social stability has been analysed. The 2000-2005 number of ISFs remained 16,0 mln. and it increased to 17.4 mln in 2006. The 2006 average ISF area accounted for 0.51 ha, i.e. 2.5 times as many as in 1990. In Republic of Mordovia, Russia, the number of ISFs increased from 168,000 to 187,999 within 2001-2006. The average ISF area was 0.6 ha in Mordovia in 2006. Potato and vegetable crops accounted for the most part of ISF arable land in both Russia and Mordovia. While the share of ISFs to livestock profile remained stable in all groups of animals across Russia, that was essential for goats and sheep (about 100 percent) in Mordovia. The republican government supports ISFs through payment for meat and livestock supply, per milk cow subsidies (500 roubles/cow) and per sow subsidies (500 roubles/sow), grain forage purchase subsidies, as well as through subsidizing insemination, veterinary and keeping services. Feed, fuel farm product shipment and other services for ISFs are provided by corporate farms. The local authorities are encouraged to increase ISF livestock and milk purchase from ISFs. The Mordovia's government allocated 23.5 mln. roubles for these purposes in 2006. The ISF patterns, maximizing receipts, have been developed. They include subsistence ISFs, subsistence and commodity ISFs, and specialty commodity ISFs. The latter provide a per capita monthly income, accounting for 13,131 roubles, to the household of 3 persons. The further ISFs' development is associated with intra-ISF cooperation and their cooperation with corporate farms.
