A method for in vitro obtaining of drought-tolerant corn plants (Zea mays L.) has been developed using two selective factors: polyethylene glycol and mannitol. The selective system with mannitol provided better elimination of sensitive cells and higher viability of plants regenerated after selection. Cell lines of three corn genotypes resistant to 0,8 M mannitol were selected, and plants were obtained from them. The progeny of the selected plants according to physiological tests and rate of growth showed the increased tolerance to drought in comparison with the initial genotypes. The fact testifies to a possibility of using the system with mannitol for selection of tolerant to water deficiency corn plants.
