Growth and yield of pearl millet (pennisetum glaucum l.) intercropped with cowpea and groundnut

A field experiment was conducted for two consecutive seasons (2001/02 and 2002/03) at the farm of the University of Zalingei, Western Darfur State, Sudan, to study the growth and yield of pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum L.) intercropped with cowpea and groundnut. Seeds of a local pearl millet cultivar (Dimbi) were sown in a 1: 1, 1:2 and 2: 1 ratios of cowpea or groundnut plus a sole crop as a control. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with four replications. The results showed that intercropping treatments significantly affected plant height and number of leaves per plant of pearl millet. The mixtures containing millet and groundnut showed superiority over the other treatments and the sole crop in most of the measured parameters. No significant differences were obtained between the treatments in leaf area index (LAI), stem diameter and l000-seed weight in the two seasons. In contrast, seed yield of pearl millet was significantly affected in both seasons. Pearl millet and groundnut rows gave significantly higher yields than the rows consisting of millet and cowpea or the sole crop as indicated by the higher values of the land equivalent ratio for these treatments
