Identification of the chickpea wilt/root-rot pathogens and their interaction with lesion nematode pratylenchus sp.

The causal agents of chickpea wilt/root-rot were isolated from wilted chickpea plants collected randomly from a sick-plot at the farm of the Agricultural Research Corporation, Shambat Research Station. They were identified as Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. ciceris Schltdl. and F. solani (Mart.) Sacc. The pathogenicity of the causal agents was studied in the nursery during 2003/2004. Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. ciceris and F. solani were constantly pathogenic. The effect of the interaction between F. oxsporum f. sp. ciceris, F. solani and the root lesion nematode Pratylenchus sp. was examined in the nursery during 2003/2004 season using the chickpea susceptible cultivar Shendi. The results showed that the inoculation of F. solani alone induced mortality of 11.46%, whereas when F. solani was inoculated with Pratylenchus sp. there was 6.25% mortality. F. solani caused yield loss of 24.10% alone, but when inoculated with Pratylenchus sp., the yield loss was 14.40%. Co-infection with F. oxysporum f. sp. ciceris and Pratylenelchus sp. induced the highest mortality of 19.20% and the highest yield loss of 66.70%
