In beech forest management, we are confronted with high labour costs and low value of beech timber due to red heart formation and other wood defects. An overview of modern concepts in beech tending is presented, describing the models, developed in Central Europe; i.e. Swiss tending model with around 150 crop trees per ha, German tending model with around 100 crop trees per ha, and German and French tending models with maximum number of 80 crop trees per ha. Due to similar management conditions, some of the described concepts are applicable to situation in Slovenia. We suggest earlier selection of lower number of crop trees with moderate thinning in the first part of the production period, timely formation and maintenance of the crown, the reduction of the production period (cca. 120 years) and usage of versatile regeneration and silvicultural techniques.
