The goal of our work was to assess the current situation in counterfeiting of the sheep milk and sheep milk products from Slovakia as well as from some countries in the EU. We evaluated the achievements according to the requirements of the valid legal standards. In the years 2007 - 2009, we realized laboratory analysis aimed to monitor the counterfeiting of sheep milk and its products. We collected samples of the sheeps milk, cheese and sheep cheese (70 samples together) during that period from producers and processors of the milk from various regions of Slovakia, as well as from a trade network in Slovakia and selected countries of the EU. We used PCR for detection. From the total number (20) of the analyzed sheeps milk samples, cows milk occurrence was detected in 8 samples. From the 30 samples of sheep cheese 12 samples contained a mixture of the cows milk. The exception was samples of sheep cheese, such as traditional dairy products, which are composed of several kinds of milk (min 50 % sheeps milk, which is declared on the label. We used PCR, so the exact quantities could not be detected.
