The objective of this study is describing genetic variation patterns of S. torminalis in the eastern part of the species distribution range. Fourteen S. torminalis populations in central and south-east Europe were sampled and 7 microsatellite loci of nuclear DNA were used for genetic analysis. S. torminalis is a forest tree occurring in populations with low densities, isolated by poor gene flow between populations, what increases genetic differentiation between populations. Our study confirms this information as F st = 0.228. Significant isolation by distance was identified, as well as genetic similarity of geographically proximate populations. Based on fractions of genepools in each population, we observed some trends in genetic variation, for exapmle along the Carpathian arc. What is interesting, population of Muránska planina was found outstanding (as regards gene pools)among Slovak populations. This is caused probably by strong disruption of genetic structure and diverzity in evolution of this population (founder effect, bottleneck).
