Virulence Diversity in the Population of the Cause Agent of Powdery Mildew in Wheat - Blumeria gramnis tritici

One-hundred and thirteen samples with cleistothecia of powdery mildew in wheat - Blumeria graminis tritici collected during 2004-2006 from 14 locations in Bulgaria were investigated. Three hundred thirty-nine cultures of single pustules isolates of the pathogen were developed; they were tested with the help of 12 differentiators and 15 monogenic lines. The investigation was carried out at Dobrudzha Agricultural Institute – General Toshevo. Eighty-one physiological races were identified, 15 of them new, with various combinations for virulence to the used differentiators. Race 1633 was predominant in the investigated populations of the pathogen. Races 5633 and 1611 also occurred with higher frequency. Race 1633 was identified in 27 isolates, which was 8.0% of the investigated cultures. Using monogenic lines, 213 genetic formulae were calculated, which characterized the virulence of the pathogen's population. The following genes demonstrated high efficiency to the virulence of the investigated pathogen populations; Pm 7, Pm 3b, pm 3c and Pm 1+2+9.
