Analysis of a complex of potential and real maize (Zea mays) pests (wireworm (Elateridae), corn-worm (Ostrinia nibialis Hbn.), western corn rootworm (Diabrotica virgifera LeConte)) prevailing in the Republic of Belarus and the possible range of activities for their control were presented. The materials on European corn borer and Werstern corn rootworm distribution and harmfulness were presented. The European corn borer was stated in the Southern agroclimatic zone of Belarus. The Western corn rootworm was an object of the foreign quarantine. There were described the methods of detection of pests which could create a potential danger for the extending maize cultivated areas (especially for grain cultivation). The control measures (agrotechnical, biological, chemical, and quarantine) for the decreasing of the indicated phytophages harmfulness were described. The necessity for the development of a system of control measures for maize protection against a pest complex was pointed out. In the Republic of Belarus taking into consideration the global climate warming it was necessary to improve the ecologically safe system of maize protection taking into account the biological and ecological peculiar features of the phytophages, their injuriousness and the technology of maize cultivation
