PRELIMINAR EVALUATION OF THE CREOLE PIG AND SYSTEMS OF PRODUCTION IN THE STATES OF APURE AND GUARICO OF VENEZUELA | EVALUACION PRELIMINAR DEL CERDO CRIOLLO Y LOS SISTEMAS DE PRODUCCION DE LOS ESTADOS APURE Y GUARICO DE VENEZUELA

Con el fin de evaluar al cerdo Criollo y sus sistemas de producción, se consideraron animales de pie de cría y de crecimiento en 41 explotaciones, ubicadas en los estados Guárico y Apure criados en condición agro-pastoril en un ambiente de sabana tropical. Se describieron cuatro características de interés: zoométricas (10 variables morfológicas y 4 índices zoométricos), fanerópticas (8 variables, utilizando una muestra aleatoria formada de 270 animales de ambos sexos de diferentes localizaciones geográficas), morfometría de órganos y composición de canal. El tamaño de muestra fue de 32 animales (15 hembras y 17 machos). El rendimiento en canal fue superior en los machos (P0.01). Los promedios hacen inferir un crecimiento acelerado durante los primeros 56 días y una disminución en los períodos finales (100 días). El contenido de ácidos grasos insaturados fue de 59.63 %. El sistema de producción predominante es extensivo caracterizado por: ausencia de registros de todo tipo, monta natural, castración una vez al año, ningún plan sanitario, sin instalaciones especiales, alimentación natural y la producción es con destino familiar y omercial.

With the purpose of evaluating the Venezuelean Creole pig and its production systems, animals young and growing animals from 41 farms, located in the states of Guárico and Apure in agriculturepasture conditions. The environment was a tropical savannah. Four characteristics of interest were selected: zoometric (10 morphological variables and 4 zoometric indices), phanaeroptical values (8 variables, using sample size from 270 animals of both sexes and several geographical sites), morphometry of several organs, and the composition of carcass. Sample size was of 32 animals (15 females and 17 males). Carcass yield was superior in the males (P0.01). Averages values suggest an accelerated growth during the first 56 days and thereafter a diminution in the final period of evaluated life (100 days). The insaturated fatty acid content was of 59.63 %. The predominant production system was extensive and characterized by an absence of records of anyl type, natural breeding, male castration once a year, no sanitary plans, without special facilities. Feeding was uncontrolled and free. On the other hand, Creole pig production is of local, self-consumption and commercial destiny.
