SOME ASPECTS OF THE NUTRITIVE VALUE OF ENSILED CASSAVA FORAGE FOR MONG CAI YOUNG PIGS FED LOW LEVELS OF PROTEIN | ALGUNOS ASPECTOS DEL VALOR NUTRITIVO DEL ENSILADO DE FORRAJE DE YUCA DADO A CERDOS MONG CAI ALIMENTADOS CON DIETAS DE POCA PROTEINA

Se evaluaron índices de digestibilidad total y balance de N en dietas contentivas de sirope de palma azucarera (Borassus flabellifer) y ensilado de forraje de yuca (EFY, 9.8. 14.9 Y 19.3% de la ración diaria en base seca). Las dietas fueron dadas ad libitum a tres cerdos Mong Cai machos castrados de 12.2 kg de acuerdo con un diseño de cuadrado latino 3x3. El material usado provino de un único silo (12 semanas) y sus características fueron: pH, 3.55, MS, 19.0%; FDN, 49.5%; N, 4.31% y cianuro, 133 mg/kg en base seca. La temperatura ambiente promedio al mediodía (12:00) fue de 31.4oC durante el experimento (enero a febrero 2001). Los animales mostraron un patrón de consumo aracterístico, con una rápida succión del sirope y una ingestión lenta del ensilado remanente. El consumo diario de alimento fue más bajo de lo esperado debido a un considerable sobrante de ensilado (como promedio, 63.4% del ofrecido). Se halló un efecto significativo de tratamiento (P0.05) en el consumo voluntario de MS, que fue bajo (89.1% de la oferta) con el nivel alto de EFY introducido en la dieta. Los animales no perdieron peso durante el ensayo (peso final, 13.9 kg). La digestibilidad total de materia seca y materia orgánica fue alta y tendió (P0.10) a disminuir linealmente con el aumento del EFY en la dieta. Lo contrario fue cierto para la digestibilidad de la FDN y el N (efecto significativo para N: R2, 0.954; P0.05). Una respuesta similarmente significativa en el mismo sentido se vio para la retención de N según se relacionara con su consumo (P0.001) o digestión (P0.05). La predicción de la digestibilidad de la MS y materia orgánica del ensilado cuando se estimó por regresión fue baja y equivalente a 43.4% (R2, 0.996) y 51.4% (R2, 0.989) respectivamente. Se considera que ciertas faltas durante la preparación del ensilado del forraje de yuca pudieran haber influido en su palatabilidad y digestibilidad tales como no observar una estricta anaerobiosis. Más aún, la inclusión de los tallos en el forraje determinó una elevación considerable en el contenido de fibra del producto, lo que contribuyó a disminuir los parámetros de digestión de los cerdos.

Total digestibility and N balance indices were evaluated in diets containing sugar palm (Borassus flabellifer) syrup and ensiled cassava foliage (EFY, 9.8, 14.9 and 19.3% of the daily ration in dry basis). The diets were given ad libitum to three young 12.2 kg Mong Cai castrate male pigs according to a 3x3 Latin square design. The utilized silage was from a single batch (12 weeks) and showed pH, 3.55; DM, 19.0%, and NDF, 49.5%, N, 4.31% and cyanide, 133 mg/kg in dry basis. Mean environment temperature was 31.4oC at midday (12:00) during the trial (January to February 2001). The animals showed a characteristic pattern of feed intake, with a very fast suction of the syrup and a slow ingestion of the remaining silage. Daily feed intake was lower than expected due to a considerable amount of EFY refusal (on average 63.4% of the silage offered). There was a significant effect of treatment (P0.05) on total DM intake, with a lower value (89.1% of feed offered) when the high level of EFY was introduced in the diet. The animals were always in a positive weight balance, near equilibrium (final weight, 13.9 kg). Total digestibility of dry matter and organic matter were high and tended (P0.10) to lineally decrease with increasing graded levels of EFY in the diet. The reversal was true for NDF and N digestibility, this effect being significant for N utilization (R2, 0.954; P0.05). A significant response was found in N retention either related to N intake (P0.001) or N digestion (P0.05). The predicted DM and OM digestibility of the ensiled cassava foliage utilized was estimated by regression were low and equivalent to 43.4% (R2, 0.996) and 51.4% (R2, 0.989) respectively. It is considered that some failures during the preparation of the cassava ensiling such a non strictly anaerobiosis could account for some changes in the silage that deteriorated its palatability and digestibility. Furthermore, the inclusion of the stems in the forage determined a considerable increase in fibre content of the product thus contributing to the decrease in digestion parameters of the pigs.
