Comparison of environmental variations in boar semen characteristics of six breeds and their crossbreds over an eight-year period

The aim of this study was to analyze environmental variations of the AI boar sperm output adjusted for other effects (breed-station, age of boar, interval between two collections and individuality of boar). A total of 303,748 records of semen collections were utilised to estimate statistics of semen traits of 3,392 boars belonging to the following groups of breeds: dam breeds: Czech Large White (LWcz) and Landrace (L), sire breeds: Czech Meat Pig (CM), Duroc (D), Large White (LW) and Pietrain (P), and crossbreds: DxH; DxLW; DxP; CMxP; HxP and LWxP. The evaluation was based on semen volume, percentage of abnormal spermatozoa, total number of spermatozoa and index of sperm efficiency. During the experimental period, spermatozoa quantities increased, whereas spermatozoa quality decreased in dam breeds. Positive trends in both spermatozoa quantity and quality were observed in sire breeds, whereas in crossbreds decreasing trends in both traits were observed. Lower values of semen volume and the number of spermatozoa were observed in summer in comparison with autumn and winter.
