Growing behavior and storage ability of three Egyptian onion cultivars with two different cultivating methods under middle Egypt conditions

Growing behavior and storage quality for different storage periods of three onion (Ailium cepa L.) cultivars (Shandaweel 1, Giza 6 Mohassan and Giza 20) planted with two cultivating methods (using sets and seedlings) were studied under the Middle Egypt growing conditions. The results showed that tested cultivars were significantly differed in their growing behavior and bulbs storage quality under the two cultivating methods. Shandaweel 1 had the shortest growing season recording the lowest values of single bulbs percentage when the sets cultivating method was used and also gave the lowest values of average single bulbs weight when it was planted using the two cultivating methods. On the other hand, Giza 20 gave the highest values of weight of single bulbs/plot and lowest culls values of bulbs/plot. Using the sets cultivating method resulted in higher percentages of disordered onion bulbs than using the seedlings method regardless the tested cultivars. Data of weight loss percentage and total number of stored bulbs which were taken from plants planted with the sets cultivating method were significantly higher than those taken from the seedlings cultivating method recorded at 2, 3, and 6 months of storage period for the studied cultivars.
