The present study aimed to understand the evolution of the census, in terms of system operations in an OCA [Agricultural County Office] Zone, with 5,018 rams and 166,401 ewes in July 2010, accounting for about 6.8% of the census of Andalusia, and correlate this evolution to the economic and health situations which affect sheep. Data from a total of 6 installments (between 2005 and 2010), and included the number of farms, census of sheep in different categories (males, females, no breeding youngers than 4 months, and between 4 and 12 months and bait animals). The study indicates that there has been a significant decrease of census from 2006 to 2010 (24.15%), this fact can be explained by the appearance in the study area of two successive outbreaks of bluetongue serotype 1 (years 2006 and 2007). Also the change in the system implementation of EC subsidies (decoupled from 2009) and the large fluctuation in the price of lamb with a sharp increase in feed costs is to be decisive in the fall in the number of animals.
