A total of 1,280 straight-run Ross 308, one-d-old chicks was used to study the effect of the inclusion of 2.5% hydrolyzed porcine digestive mucose (Palbio 50 RD, Bioibérica, S.A., Barcelona; PAL) in feeds with a total lysine (LYS) content of 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, and 1.4% on productive performance. The experimental design was completely randomized with 8 treatments arranged factorially with 2 levels of PAL and 4 levels of LYS from 1 to 21 d of age. There were 5 floor pen replicates per treatment (32 chicks each). All the birds received a common commercial diet from 21 to 32 d of age. From 1 to 21 d of age, PAL supplementation reduced ADFI (P<= 0.05) and improved FCR (P<= 0.01) and BWG (P= 0.10). Also, increasing the LYS level of the diet increased BWG (P<= 0.001) and improved FCR (P<= 0.05) but did not affect ADFI. From 1 to 7 d of age, the beneficial effects of PAL inclusion were more evident in the diets with lower LYS content. From 21 to 32 d of age, when all birds were fed a common diet, no differences were observed for any trait except for ADFI that was higher (P<= 0.01 for the PAL containing diets. It is concluded that the inclusion of 2.5% of PAL in the diet results in improved performance of the birds at any dietary LYS concentration. Also, broilers require at least 1.3% dietary LYS from 1 to 21 d of age to maximize growth performance.
