The aim of the present work is to report the catheters design and the surgical method followed for log-term nutrient metabolism studies of the portal drained viscera on a modern (Landrace) and a native (Iberian) breed. It is described a pilot experiment where net flux of glucose was measured to validate the functionality of the catheters design and catheterization method using three Landrace and three Iberian gilts fitted with catheters in carotid artery and portal vein for blood sampling, and ileal vein for para-aminohippuric acid infusion to measure blood flow, and glucose net flux rates. Surgery recovery, catheter patency and results from pilot experiment were excellent. The procedure followed is suitable for pigs and could explain differences in digestive and absorptive capacities between modern and native breeds.
