The definition and analysis of the fibrous fraction is a classical problem in animal nutrition and there have been some different attempts to determine it developing more accurate methods. One of them introduces a fraction called neutral detergent soluble fibre (NDSF) in which are included soluble and insoluble pectins, soluble hemicelluloses (arabinoxylans and Beta-glucans), fructans and oligosaccharides. The method is based in mass changes amongst extracted residues. This study tried to modify this protocol to adapt and improve it. The first modification was the adaptation of the methodology to the ANKOM extractor using nylon bags with a porosity of 25 ìm. The second change was obtaining the NDF on the ethanol insoluble residue instead of on the whole sample, to avoid double subtraction of a fraction which is soluble in ethanol but insoluble in neutral detergent. The last modification was the addition of an ether extraction previous to the analysis of feed with relevant quantities of fat. NDSF analysis according to the modified protocol seemed to be as repeatable as expected in a double extraction based method.
