Four ruminally cannulated Merino sheep were used to evaluate the effects of two diets (AL: 70:30 alfalfa hay:concentrate; GR: 70:30 grass hay:concentrate) and three times of sampling (0, 4 and 8 hours post-feeding) on fribrolytic activity in the rumen. Carboxymethylcellulase, xylanase, and amylase activities were measured in solid and liquid rumen contents. Carboxymethylcellulase and xylanase activities were greater (P<0.01) at 0 compared with 4 and 8 h postfeeding, but sampling time did not affect (P>0.05) amylase activity. All activities were greater (P<0.001) in the solid than in the liquid phase of the ruminal digesta. Xilanase activity was greater for GR than for AL diet, but carboxymethylcelulase and amylase activities were not affected by the diet.
