The most probably cause of embryonic loss is an abnormal embryonic development which hampers its implantation. However, when losses are after implantation, they are due to placental development motivated by fetus and maternal response to it. The aim of this work was to characterize gestational losses in growth line (R) respect to a selected line for litter size (A). Moreover, it focuses on the endocrine level of three important endocrine factors related to reproductive efficiency. Losses calculated in base to ovulation rate at day 12 and at birth were significant higher for line R than for line A, being 23.1% and 47.7% vs. 10.7% and 28.0% respectively. For endocrine factors, progesterone level was similar between lines and according to results of other authors at this moment of gestation. However, 17Beta-estradiol differed between lines, being the line R the one which shows minor concentration. Due to estradiol is a primary lutheotrophic factor in rabbits, it might affect corpora lutea and be the cause of fetal mortality. Furthermore, differences observed in IGF-I were favorable to line R. In conclusion, growth line shows gestational losses and endocrine factors different to the selected line for litter size.
