Effects fo Tillage Frequency and Weed Control on Yield and Yield Components of Faba Bean in Central Highlands of Ethiopia.

A field experiment was conducted from 1999 to 2001 to study the effects of tillage frequency and weed control practices on yield and yield components of faba bean (Vicia faba cv. CS20DK) in Welmera Wereda of West Shewa, Ethiopia. Four levels of tillage frequency as main plots and two levels of weeding as sub plots were evaluated in a split plot design with three replications. Results indicated that mean faba bean seed and total biological yields, plant height, number of pods per plant and seeds per pod were positively influenced by tillage frequency and weeding. The interaction of tillage and weed control significantly affected seed yield of faba bean. The highest mean seed yield was obtained from three ploughings and one hand weeding six weeks after crop emergence. Ploughing two, three and four times including the last pass for seed covering increased mean seed yields of faba bean by about 26, 52 and 54% compared to the control (planting with first ploughing). Similarly, weeding once by hand resulted in mean seed yield advantage of about 19% compared to the unweeded check. Economic analysis showed that the highest net benefit was obtained from three ploughings including seed covering and weeding once by hand six weeks after crop emergence.
