During the last years total area of buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum) has increased notably in Latvia, including Eastern part of country, but there is a lack of actual information about buckwheat growing, best terms and rates of sowing. The aim of the study was to investigate changes in buckwheat yield depending on sowing time and rate. Field trials were carried out in farm „Arāji”, Kraslava territory in 2010. Buckwheat was sown at six different dates – 15 May, 20 May, 25 May, 30 May, 04 June and 09 June. Two types of sowing were used – drill sowing, where 4 seed rates were used – 200, 300, 400, 500 germinate able nutlets per square m, and the column sowing with the three seed rates – 150, 250, 300 germinate able nutlets per square m. Time of sowing and seed rate influenced the yield of buckwheat significantly. The highest average yield of buckwheat was obtained from plots with drill sowing – on average 1.7 t haE-1, but from plots with column sowing the average yield was 1.3 t haE-1. The highest individual productivity of plant contrariwise – was observed in plots sown in columns. The yield of buckwheat was on average 30-50% higher in the plots that were sown on June 4-9, if compared with those sown on May 15-20, i.e. earlier sowing times were not the most suitable for buckwheat sowing in 2010. Enlargement of the sowing rate in all sowing times and both sowing types (drill and column sowing) increased the yield of buckwheat.
