Strawberry variety improvement in the Philippines
2011
Padua, D.P. | Kilakil, C.M., Benguet State Univ., La Trinidad, Benguet (Philippines)
The first and only strawberry breeding program in the Philippines started in 1999 at the Benguet State Univ., La Trinidad, Benguet,Philippines. It was aimed at developing new strawberry cultivars with very high yield potential, acceptable fruit quality, sufficient level of tolerance or resistance to mites and disease such as botrytis and good shipping quality. More than 100 single and reciprocal crosses were made using 30 varieties and four wild relatives as parental.Six advance lines selected earlier were utilized for backcrosses. After at least three years of evaluation, one single cross and one back cross outperformed sweet Charlie, the check variety commonly planted by local farmers, by about 1.2-1.75 tons per hectare. These superior lines would easily give a conservative additional income of Php 72,000.00-105,000.00 per hectare at an average price of Php 60.00 per kg. Three other single crosses and 2 backcrosses also show good potential as they had comparable yields with the check variety. All the potential varieties are quiet sweet with sugar content ranging from 9.23-9.93 deg Brix indicating their suitability for fresh fruit consumption. At least two others have sugar content higher than that of sweet Charlie. All the advance selection have moderate resistance to mites and thrips, two of the most destructive strawberry pest locally. A live strawberry germplasm is currently being maintained to support the breeding program.
