Comparative efficiency of different weed control practices in autumn planted maize (Zea mays L.)

The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications with a net plot size of 5m x 3m. Maize single cross hybrid R-2315 was used as test crop. Crop was sown on 2nd August 2006 with a single row hand drill using a seed rate of 30 kg per ha in 75 cm apart rows. Plant to plant distance of 25 cm was maintained by thinning at early growth stage. The fertilizer was applied at rate of 200 kg nitrogen and 1-50 kg phosphorus per ha in the form of urea and triple super phosphate (TSP), respectively. Whole of the phosphorus and half of the nitrogen was applied at sowing while remaining half of the nitrogen was applied at the time of 2nd irrigation. Experiment comprised treatments: Weedy check (W1), manual hoeing (W2), bentazon @ 720 g a.i. per ha (W3), bentazon @ 840 g a.i. per ha (W4), bentazon @ 960 g a.i. per ha (W5), bentazon @ 1080 g a.i. per ha (W6), bentazon @ 1200 g a.i. per ha (W7) and pendimethalin @ 1031 g a.i. per ha (W8).
