Two factor field experiment was conducted according to split-plot design with four replicates. Spring wheat was grown in three-course crop rotation with winter wheat as preceding crop and winter rape as pre-preceding crop. The first factor comprised three methods of presowing soil tillage during which stubble crops were plowed under before the cereal; A1) without catch crops; A2) white mustard as a catch crop; A3) mixture of oat with legumes as a catch crop. Four rates of nitrogen fertilizer constituted the second factor; 0 kg; 40 kg; 80 kg; 120 kg. Timing of nitrogen application was: I _ before sowing of wheat, II _ at 31_32 BBCH stage, III _ at 49 BBCH stage
