Flood defense structures along the Serbian reach of the river Danube were built to enable the protection from floods of return periods once in 100 years. Therefore, the appearance of flood wave with peak discharge equal or higher of 100-years value is considered as an extreme situation. Extreme flood wave along stretches of the river Danube downstream of its large tributaries can emerge only in the case of simultaneous appearance of high waters on the Danube itself and on one or more tributaries. This paper presents some results of the analysis of conditions that may lead to extreme flood situations on the river Danube. Different combinations of flood waves on the Danube, the rivers Tisza and Sava were investigated. Finally, the statistical ranking is presented of calculated flood waves at the Veliko Gradiste cross section, characterizing the lower part of the Danube in Serbia.
