The national buffalo livestock in last years recorded a considerable expansion, becoming a concrete source of income in zootechnic activities. The scientific knowledges about this animal specie result from researches conducted in tropical countries; although it is very important not correlate the discoveries to the Italian zootechnical reality, where the breeding of buffaloes have own management and a different climatic conditions. About the researches on the physio-pathology of the Italian buffaloes (Bubalus bubali), the Authors report a review about the morphological and structural features of the eye in Mediterranean buffaloes, with particular regard about the study of the defense mechanisms of the ocular surface against the foreign pathogens, closely related to the external environment and to the kind of breeding performed in Italy. Performing the specialistic ocular examination, the Authors reported the semiological elements of the eye in buffaloes and particularly the tear protein pattern, considering the important role of the proteic substances of the precorneal tear film in order to maintain the anatomic and functional integrity of the external ocular segment.
