Plasma cobalt levels in cattle submitted to different management systems

The trace elements, including cobalt, are important for the development of many organic physiological functions. Cobalt is required for the formation of vitamin B12, necessary for the synthesis of volatile fatty acids (NEFA), the main energy source in ruminants. In the bullfighting cattle a minor contribution of this trace element may predispose the animals to a lower production of energy, lack of strength and lower performance during the fight. We used 38 animals, 11 fighting bulls slaughtered in the arena, 15 Lidia cows slaughtered at the abattoir and 12 Charolais steers keep under intensively conditions and also slaughtered at the abattoir. The Lidia cattle were always maintained under extensive conditions. Cobalt analysis was performed using spectrophotometry coupled plasma (ICP) in plasma obtained from blood collected immediately after slaughter of animals. Statistical analysis was performed by analysis of variance. Plasma cobalt concentrations are higher in the bull after the fight, followed by the animals keep in intensive system and slaughtered at the abattoir and the lower values correspond to the Lidia females extensively managed, and with significant differences among the three groups.
