Constructed wetlands in Glozan (Serbia) represent the first constructed system of biologically active fields for treatment of wastewaters in Serbia. The system was designed and constructed to accept municipal wastewaters of Glozan settlement. For this purpose, the plant used is the common reed (Phragmites communis), whose natural habitat is on the site of the constructed system. The wetland system in Glozan appeared to be efficient in removing suspented matter by 94% and lowering content of organic matter, expressed via BODs, by 80.9%. Removal of nitrogen matter is also significant, and it amounts from 47.3 to 78.3%, as well as in the removal of phosphorus by 29.1%. In view of the fact that the removal efficiency is primarily a function of the inlet concentrations of the constituents, the results achieved show that the constructed wetlands are very effective in their functioning. The system efficiency is also associated with the role of microorganisms and plant species involved in the wetland, usually common reed. Best results are achieved under optimum conditions of the environment for the microroganisms and plants, i.e. in summer and autumn. It was found that the Glozan wetlands retain in average 293 kg P/year and 2924 kg N/year. The results showed that these elements are taken up by plants.
