The role of polymorphonuclear granulocytes in the pathogenesis of recurrent airway obstruction (RAO), as well as characteristics of this disease based clinical, endoscopical, morphological and cytological changes in equine lungs were studied in this dissertation. Thirteen horses of different age and sex, with clinical manifestations of respiratory diseases and 6 control horses were examined endoscopically, bronchoalveolar lavage was performed and microbiological examination, as well as quantitative and qualitative cytological examinations were performed on bronchoalveolar lavage samples. Virological and microbiological examination on lung samples, and hematological and serological examination on antibodies for respiratory viruses on blood samples were performed. Lungs and tracheobronchial lymph nodes were examined grossly and tissue samples were collected for pathohistological examination. All mentioned findings correlate pointing to the fact that neutrophil granulocytes have the key role in the pathogenesis of recurrent airway obstruction, the disease which have combined inflammatory and immunological etiology, and emphysema is secondary to airway obstruction.
