Comparative pomological study on new Bulgarian cherry cultivars

The paper presents a comparative analysis of major biometric fruit characteristics of new sweet cherry cultivars Kossara, Rosita, Rosalina, and Trakijska Hrustyalka. They were created under the sweet cherry breeding programme, which started at the Fruit-Growing Institute in Plovdiv (Bulgaria) in 1987. Kossara was released in 2008 and it was established by embryoculture from the parent combination Ranna Cherna x Burlat. Its fruits have an average weight of 8 g and they ripen 10 days before those of Burlat. Rosita and Rosalina were released in 2009. The fruits of the former ripen a week before those of Burlat and the fruits of the latter - a week before those of Van. Fruits of Rosalina have the capacity to dry on the tree. Both cultivars have two-coloured fruit skin. Cultivar Trakijska Hrustyalka has very large and dark-coloured fruits with good firmness.
