Genetic resources of apple, plum, sour cherry and walnut in the region of Serbia are rich and polymorphic. They comprise autochthonous cultivars, natural populations and wild relatives of these fruit species. Breeding trends are based on the search for favourable variants with agronomically important characters and the expansion of current genetic pool. Research institutions such as Fruit Research Institute, Čačak, Faculty of Agriculture, Belgrade, Faculty of Agriculture, Novi Sad and PKB INI Agroekonomik, Belgrade are involved in collection and evaluation of indigenous material, not only for purposes of breeding, but also for the protection of these fruit species from genetic erosion. The lack in financial resources has led to the removal of some fruit collections, especially cultivars of indigenous origin. The latest data suggest that ex situ collections comprise as follows: 1,464 apple genotypes (569 introduced and 397 autochthonous cultivars, 462 selections and 36 wild species); 334 plum genotypes (269 introduced and 65 autochthonous cultivars) and 26 in situ genotypes; 121 sour cherry genotypes (100 introduced and 21 autochthonous cultivars) and 11 in situ genotypes; 177 walnut genotypes (120 introduced and 57 autochthonous cultivars).
