Horse chestnut (Aesculius hippocastanum L.) is an Arctotertiary endemic of the south part of the Balkan Peninsula. In the seventeenth century, it was introduced into whole Europe and it has been grown intensively for the purposes of horticulture and landscape architecture since then. Because of its exceptional adabtibility to prevailing ecological conditions in our country it often found in urban communities and in different categories of green areas. In order to get better horse chestnut seedlings it is important to study the variability of its secundary population, as well as reproductive function of selected trees. 50 genotypes of horse chestnut from the green areas of the city of Bačka Palanka, Novi Sad and Sremski Karlovci (Serbia) have been selected for the research by applying the method of individual selection in a broader sence. Analysis and assessment of these trees confirmed that the majority of genotypes have adapted to the existing environmental conditions and further justified the collection and storage of seeds. Chemical analysis of seeds and determination of moisture, starch, oil and protein have confirmed the existence of differences between individual secondary populations in these localities. Testing of germination has showed significant differences between different ways of saving seeds, and the differences between the localities from which the seeds are collected. Experiments with generative seed justified collecting and storing seeds from trees that have adapted to the condotions of the urban environment. Research has shown that there is variability in populations of horse chestnut in urban green spaces, and that the horse chestnut, as allochthonous species, has shown huge adaptibility to our environmental conditions, and should be widely used for planting in the open green spaces, parks and park forests.
