The aim of this study was to determine pathomorphological lesions in organs of birds infected with H5N1 avian influenza virus, presence and distribution of viral antigen in tissue samples of mentioned birds, as well as degree of their correlation. Examination was conducted on the carcasses of seven mute swans (Cygnus olor) amd one domestic rooster (Gallus gallus domesticus) which were previously positive on highly pathogenic avian influenza virus subtype H5N1 by virology methods, virus isolation on chicken embryos and molecular diagnostics. Most constant gross lesions were haemorrhages and necrosis of the pancreas. In addition, the lung congestion and edema, subepicardial haemorrhages, congestion, subcapsular haemorrhages and focal necrosis of the liver and spleen were observed. Major histological lesions were multifocal necrosis of pancreatic acinar cells, then haemorrhages and multifocal necrosis of the liver and spleen, encephalitis non purulenta, with neuronal dystrophy and neuronophagia. Viral nucleoprotein was immunohistochemically proven in pancreas, brain, liver, lungs and in one swan in kidney. High correlation between pathomorphological lesions and distribution of viral antigen was determined. Lesions in mute swans and domestic rooster were similar in character and distribution, which is about equal sensitivity of these two species on H5N1 avian influenza virus.
