According to the National Environmental Action Plan II (NEAP II) from 2006 there is a need to establish an integrated system for safe management for hazardous medical waste (HMW) generated by healthcare and veterinary institutions in Republic of Macedonia (RM). The aim of this plan is to provide the basis for implementation an adequate system for collection, transport, treatment and final disposal of HMW from all healthcare institutions in RM. The HMW management plan comprises a detailed description of HMW handling in all healthcare institutions, collection and storage in appropriate storage facilities at all major healthcare institutions (clinics, general hospitals and health institutions), and finally transport from the storage facilities to decentralized treatment facilities, based on a autoclave system. The technical organizational/institutional and financial conditions required for implement the plan has been identified, and recommendations are made, including a proposed implementation program (action plan). The amount of HMW, generated in the whole country is estimated to 900-1000 tons, corresponding 15% of the total waste generated in health care institutions. One-third of the HMW, amount of 350-360 tons/year is separately collected in Skopje and Kumanovo and transported to Drisla landfill near Skopje for incineration.
