High reproductive efficiency of sows is the primary factor of successful pig production. The level of reproductive efficiency is predominantly related to the values of the basic parameters of sow fertility, such as weaning-to-oestrus interval, farrowing rate (%) and litter size. In production conditions it is acceptable if the weaning-to-oestrus interval is within 7 days, if the farrowing rate is higher than 80% and if the average number of live-born pigs per litter is higher than 10. These values, however, can be frequently reduced, influenced by a number of factors of infective and non-infective etiology. Infective factors (bacterial or viral etiology) can result in lower fertility, leading to common symptoms including anaestrous (poorer cycling), decreased ovulation rates and embryo survivability, increased number of sows that recycle, and mummies and abortions. This paper presents the basic infective factors of infertility in sows, their mechanisms, as well as the possibilities of practical solutions of this significant problem in pig reproduction.
