Carbadox is a synthetic antimicrobial drug which belongs to the group quinoxaline-dioxide. As feed additive, besides its antimicrobial effect, carbadox is also used as growth promoter for increase rate of weight gain and to improve feed efficiency in swine. On the basis of experiments and toxicity data, EU banned the use of carbadox as growth promoter in porcine feeding stuffs in December of 1998 (Commission Regulation (EC) No 2788/98 dated December 22nd, 1998, OJL347). Within the National Program for control and Systemic Monitoring of Residues in Live Animal and Products of Animal Origin the residue of cardbadox metabolite-QCA (quinoxalin-2-carboxylic acid) is determined in swine liver using gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC/MS) method that is accepted by the EU as a confirmative method.
