Investigation presented in this paper shows that the relationship between tribological characteristics of various materials depends on what is to be determined, i.e. whether friction force or wear parameters are measured. By application of existing tribological knowledge in practice, introduction of tribology in education and systematic research of tribological features, it is possible to increase the national product in the developed countries by 1.3 to 1.6%. Largest savings can be achieved through reduction of maintenance costs and replacement of worn parts.
