Genetic evaluation of Karadi sheep using lambs body weight

Karadi breed which comprises about 18-20% of sheep population is native to the northeastern of Iraq (Alkass and Juma, 2005). Animal breeder aim to improve animals genetically to increase their income, and this could be realized by arranging pedigree record, testing the performance and genetic evaluation individually to get the correct decisions in selecting the best animals to be parents of the next generation (Kinghorn, 1997). This aim to evaluate Karadi sheep genetically depending on lamb body weights at birth, weaning and at 6-month of age by predicting their breeding values individually using AM program. This study utilized 257, 195 and 155 body weights of Karadi lambs at birth (BWT), weaning (WWT) and at 6-month of age (SMWT), respectively, bred at Animal Breeding Project, University of Duhok (Iraq) during two lambing seasons (2006-2007 and 2007-2008). AM program (Meyer, 1991) was used to predict breeding values (PBV) for all male and female lambs having records and their parents, and real producing abilities (RPA) for dams with record only. The conclusions of this study are: it is feasible to use an animal model for evaluating Karadi sheep and obtaining breeding values as well as real producing values which can be helpful in ranking, comparing animals and select the best to be parents for the next generation; high proportion of young animals should be selected.
