Chromium is a heavy metal whose concentration in the environment is increasing. In inorganic systems occurs in several chemical forms. Only Cr(III) and Cr(VI) are significant in biological systems. The properties of trivalent and hexavalent chromium are reviewed in this paper with respect to its toxicity and useful effect as bioelement. Particularly, trivalent chromium is an important essential nutrient component, while excess of hexavalent chromium in biological systems has been implicated in specific forms of cancer.
