The apple cultivars Antonovka Obyknovennaya (AO) (control), Arkadik, Legenda, Mayak Zagor'ya (MZ), Vasyugan, Ostankino and President were studied in 2007-2010 with the use of frost penetration at t -40 deg C. Frost resistance (FR) was assessed at points. Vasyugan, AO and Arkadik had the maximum FR of buds in January - March and Ostankino had the minimum one. Vegetative buds had the minimum frost damages in January and February, while the maximum ones in December. The cultivars Arkadik, MZ and President had the highest bark FR in December (with damages of 1.3 -1.7 points) and AO (up to 0.1 p.) and Legenda had the lowest FR (up to 0.6 p.). During the subsequent periods of frost penetration from January to March bark FR of Arkadik, Legenda, MZ and President was at the level of AO (up 1.0 p.). Ostankino had the lowest FR (up to 1.3 p.) and Vasyugan had the highest one (less than 0.5 p.). The resistance to t of -40 deg C of Ostankino, Vasyugan, MZ and AO remained until March at the same level. The minimum bark damages were fixed in January and February and the maximum ones were done in December and March. In December Arkadik, MZ, President (2.0 p. and above) had the maximum timber damages and the cultivars Legenda (1.5 p.) and Vasyugan (1.6 p.) had the minimum ones. During the subsequent periods from January to March the damage level of Arkadik, Legenda, MZ did not exceed 1.2 points and the one of President did not exceed 1.4-1.8 p. The cultivar Vasyugan had high timber FR (damages up to 1.0 p.) from January to March and varieties and AO had it in February - March. The conclusion has been done that Vasyugan and Arcadik are characterized by a high level of FR (-40 deg. C) during a winter, that allows to recommend them as a source of this trait for breeding.
