An experiment was undertaken at Gezira Research Station Farm in season 2005/06 to evaluate the efficacy and selectivity of Sharpen 500EC, Samurai 500EC (new formulations of pendimethalin) and sharoxy 240 EC (a new formulation of oxyfluorfen) on weed control in transplanted onion. Both pendimethalin and oxyfluorfen formulations excellently controlled grasses early in the season with long persistent effects. The tested products displayed moderate to good effects on broad-leaved weeds. The herbicides, without supplementary weeding, reduced weed ground cover by 60%. However, man-hours required for supplementary weeding were reduced by 80%. They also reduced weed biomass at harvest in comparison with the unweeded control. Unrestricted weed growth reduced onion bulb yield by about 65%. Herbicides treatments without supplementary weeding increased onion bulb yield in comparison with the unweeded control. Supportive hand weeding to the herbicides treatments resulted in further increase of weed control and onion bulb yield in comparison with the respective treatment without supportive hand weeding and displayed yield similar to the weeded control
