This paper is concerned with evaluation of productive and growth characteristics in old-growth spruce-beech forest in NNR Skalná Alpa. Relation between spruce and beech crown and stem volume and utilization of available growth space were analyzed. Data used for determination of production charakteristics were collected on the transects (1O x 70 m each) of three permanent research plots in years 1982, 1992,2002. Relations between crown and stem volume are characterized by using the coefficient of determination 9r), with values from 0.37 (optimal stage)up to 0.82 (disintegration stage)in case of beech. In case of spruce coefficient of determination ranges between 0.45 (growth up stage) and 0.68(disintegration stage). The analysis confirmed the competition of tree species in crown space is significantly higher in growth-up and optimal stage and therefore the assimilatory area of tree crowns has a lesser influence on production characteristics of stem. A weaker relation was confirmed for spruce, where the competition in the crown space is higher. Crown utilization of available growth space ranges from 17,52% to 20,89% whereas maximum reach in to growth-up stage.
